Wax Resist Geometric Design

On my latest trip to the Scrap Store there was a box of thin white candles. I picked up a handful as I thought they'd be perfect for wax resist.

I'm still loving the tonal geometric trend so I decided to do something with that.
I started by drawing lines all over a piece of watercolour paper to make lots of triangles.
Woodstock ruler!

I had to keep tilting the paper to catch the light so I could see the lines I'd made.

Using my water colour paints I filled in the triangles. I painted right up to the wax line which stopped me from going any further.

I really like the delicate look of water colour paints, and I don't mind the jagged edges of the triangles from the wax line.

Inspired by Kaelah's geometric wall I added glitter to some of the triangles simply by applying PVA glue with a paint brush and sprinkling on a thick covering of fine glitter.

And then I made two more!
These are actually postcards - they have the lines printed on the back - so I might try to sell them at my next craft fair.

Matchstick Pendants

When I was at uni I bought a bag of these wooden matchsticks one weekend thinking they would be useful for my model making, only to find that my friend Natalie had bought me the same thing.
I thought it was about time I did something with my abundance of matchsticks.
Ok, this project only used 18 of them, but it's a start.

I started experimenting with shapes that I could make using the sticks, and UHU'd them together.
I also added some E6000 to make sure they didn't fall apart.

I painted them black, added a jump ring, and hey presto; geometric pendant.

I think they look pretty cool.
I picked black because my outfits tend to be black + another colour, so I figured they pendants would go with most things I wear.
I don't know how long they'll last, because they are just glued together, but they're doing all right for now.

Geometeric Art

Remember the geometric art posted on A Beautiful Mess almost a year ago?

Well I finally got around to making my own version.

The hardest part was figuring out how big I wanted my equilateral triangle to be and drawing it out to make sure all the sides and angles were equal. Oh maths.

Like the original, I used book pages, coloured paper and photos.
I used all pink paper so it matches my room, and I used all photos of my family and friends because I like their faces! Especially my cousin with the crazy eyes. Yeah, that's her top right.

Once everything was spray mounted and trimmed I popped my new art in a frame.
I got this frame when I was doing work experience in Year 10 at a local art shop that also did framing, and they gave it to me for free.

I think it looks lovely next to my IKEA flower lamp, plastic tiara, Lost cast photo, signed Ian Somerhalder photo and signed Joshua Radin concert ticket.

Geometric beads

I've seen a few things around the internet about making geometric beads from polymer clay, so I decided to make some myself.

I started by rolling small pieces of Sculpey into balls, and then flattening the edges against a ruler.
Once I'd baked them I made the sides flatter and more angular with sand paper.

I painted the beads with silver acrylic paint and used some of them to make this bar necklace.

I can't decided if I like it better as a short or long necklace.
Thoughts?

With some of the other beads, after I'd painted them silver, I then painted them with nail varnish for a metallic look.

Oh Sculpey, you're so full of possibilities.

Geometric Art

I'm currently drowning in 1x1cm roof tiles so instead of sharing that dull progress I'll show you an artist that came to speak at uni today.
Yes, it's not all studio time at NUCA. Sometimes artists come and talk to us. Quite often they're kinda boring or I don't like the work.
But the work of Mark Harris caught my eye.

Continuous Offense - Blade
Acrylic on Lambda Print
48 x 30cm. 2007
His slightly earlier work involved painting over photographic prints with really detailed, colourful threads covering the objects.

Continuous Defense - Northern Gate
Acrylic on Reproduction
26 x 19cm. 2008
Another series of work came about after rescuing a bunch of old photographs that his father-in-law was throwing out. He painted futuristic looking 'defences' onto them and I love the mix of styles.

Western District Archway
Collage and Acrylic on Paper
47 x 30cm. 2009
He received the photographs in brown folders which he made collages on using images of buildings and geometric drawings.
Check out the rest of his work here.

The triangular, geometric imagery that features heavily in Harris' work reminds me of Yes and Yes's blog header...

...Elsie's geometric photo art...

...and the Gotye video. Which I'm sure you've all seen by now.
