Custom Order Book Covers

I recently had a request from an Etsy customer to make fabric book covers for her pet's medical records, after she saw the notebooks I have in my shop. This customer had already bought some felt keyrings of her dogs so she wanted the books to match.

I sent her a photo of all the fabric I thought would be suitable for this project and she picked this blue and white striped fabric with embroidered hearts.

To make the covers I cut out a long rectangle of the patterned fabric, as well as a matching one in plain white which would be the inside. I cut out the animal faces and sewed them to he patterned fabric. The two dogs were based on existing patterns I had, just with a few colour changes, but the cat I had to design from scratch.

With back sides of the two pieces of fabric facing I sewed along the top and the bottom and one of the sides. I turned them right side out and inserted two pieces of card to give the cover some sturdiness. I then sewed up the remaining open side

I made the fabric pieces extra long so that I could fold in the sides, and sew in place, to create pockets for the covers of the medical records to slide in to.

Making these covers involved a bit of trial and error but the customer was so pleased with them and said the records fit perfectly.

Felt Dog Notebooks

Remember the handmade notebooks I made? Well I've made some more, but this time with felt dog faces on the front. At this stage, I think if you stood still for too long in my craft room I'd try to sew a dog face to you!

For this set of notebooks I used plain white paper for the pages, from unused sketchbooks, rather than different coloured paper like in my first set. I like the mix of papers but some of the feedback I got from having those notebooks out at craft fairs was that some people prefer plain paper. So I'm giving the people what they want!

Each notebook has 48 pages which are sewn together down the middle and attached to a card cover, which is covered in patterned fabric. I love a reason to dig into my fabric stash.

I've listed the notebooks in my Etsy shop so if you're interested, check them out here.

A Felt Dog for Every Occasion

This year I've been expanding my felt dog business by producing dogs for different occasions.

I made a dog on a heart for Valentine's day.

A dog ghost for Halloween.

I even made a dog bride and groom to celebrate my wedding this year.

And of course my Christmas dogs in Santa hats are back for another year.

Custom Felt Dogs

Today I'm sharing a few of the custom felt dogs I've made recently.
As the countdown to Christmas has begun I've been getting lots of new orders coming my way.

I was really please with how this tricolour Corgi turned out. Look at that happy face! I went on to use this pattern as the basis for a standard Corgi in my shop which I've sold twice already.

This felt dog is @chunkithefrenchie on Instagram. He wears some great slogan t-shirts that are worth checking out.

I've started making some dogs with Santa hats on ready for Christmas, but this customer asked if I could do a hat wearing a baseball hat. Sure thing!
I had to google to find out which team this dog supports. Go Astros!

Pug Pouch

I recently redesigned my pug felt face and somewhere in that process I got the idea to put the face on a pouch. Nothing wrong with expanding my product line!

The first thing I had to do was cut out and sew the felt face.

Then I dug around in my fabric stash to see what would work. I hadn't intended to use a patterned fabric but when I came across this grey plaid I thought it was perfect. You may have seen it used before on this owl doorstop project. It's actually an old dress that belonged to my sister.

Then it was time to assemble the pouch, by which point I was too focused on the project to stop and take photos of the process. So for a quick written recap; I sewed the two fabrics together to make the front side, then sewed the two sides to the zip with the lining fabric in between. Then I hand stitched the felt face amd the felt letters to the front side with some interfacing on the back for added structure. And finally I sewed the sides and the bottom to complete the pouch.

I'm really pleased with how this turned out. It's been a while since I made a bag or pouch so I'm glad I remembered how to do it!

Lisa's Felt Friends

I've recently set up an Instagram account for my felt dogs, and other animals, called Lisa's Felt Friends as I want to try and grow that little business.

Here are some of the new dogs I've been making that you can find there.

These are a couple of custom dogs I made recently for Woof Wag Walk.

And I've been branching out from just dogs with a cat and a sloth! There's a couple more cats in my shop as well as a panda and a koala.

So if you're interested in seeing which animals I'm making, follow along

And don't forget my regular Instagram is @lisagharrold to join me there too.

More Custom Felt Dogs

The lead up to Christmas was very busy for me as I was getting regular orders for custom felt dog decorations. Above is a selection of just some of the dogs I've created over the last few month.
My Etsy shop is on holiday mode at the moment while I finish up some other projects, but I'll be back ready to sew soon.

And it's not just dogs! I had my first cat request and I think it turned out just as good as the dogs, so I think I might start adding some cats to my general stock.
What other animals do you think people might be interested in?

Custom Felt Dogs

I've been really busy recently making custom felt dogs. It's really exciting how popular they are.
I get a lot of my orders through my Etsy shop, but I also posted about them on Facebook and a few of my friends shared the post which has brought in some orders too.

Here are some of the dogs I've made.

I've found that French Bulldogs are definitely the most popular dog at the moment. I've sold quite a few of my standard ones, and had lots of orders for custom ones.

The dogs that I think turn out the best are ones with high contrast features, like this Dachshund.

I've had orders come from all over. From as close as my work place, to other countries like America, and Sweden - where this labrador is from!
